Photographer: a masculine noun?

A Profession That Sparks the Imagination

While the gender stereotypes perpetuated by visual culture have been repeatedly criticized, the question of their origin is often glossed over.

This project aims to highlight the power dynamics that shape images, from their production to their reception. In particular, it examines gendered hierarchies within the photography profession. By analyzing a variety of materials (periodicals, photographs, films, etc.), it also examines the joint construction of social and visual norms.

Finally, at the intersection of research and outreach—between historical heritage and contemporary issues—he explores the challenges of visual education through the lens of how we learn to see and its gendered, social, and political implications.
