Lecture - “The Training of Women Photographers in the Second Half of the 20th Century”

As part of International Women's Day 2021, the Jules Verne University of Picardy features artist and researcher Véra Léon, the 2020 recipient of our Research and Creation Support Program. Organized by the UPJV’s Delegation for Gender Equality and the Fight Against Gender Discrimination.

The day will be divided into two parts:

↘︎ A workshop focused on discovering, manipulating, reimagining, and reclaiming popular images: A group of students will examine representations related to gender and feminism, drawing on a diverse body of visual material (newspapers, cultural publications, artistic works, etc.).

↘︎ A series of lectures and discussions on the training of women photographers between 1945 and 1982, drawing on the interdisciplinary fields of education, history, gender studies, and art history.

Véra Léon’s project aims to highlight the power dynamics that shape representations and images, from their production to their reception. Straddling historical legacy and contemporary issues, her project explores the challenges of image-based education through the lens of how we learn to see and the gendered, social, and political implications of that process.
