Developing a Photographic Eye in Photography Schools: What Kind of Visual Culture?
While the stereotypes perpetuated by visual culture have been criticized time and again, the question of their origin is often glossed over. This lecture will trace visual culture back to its roots—namely, the process by which our visual perception is formed.
Véra Léon holds a Ph. D. In the history of photography. Her dissertation is titled “One Is Not Born a Photographer, One Becomes One: A Contribution to a Social and Gendered History of Artistic and Technical Training in France (1945–1982).” She is a recipient of the 2020–2021 Research and Creative Support Program from the Institut pour la photographie (Hauts-de-France) for a project titled “Photographer: A Masculine Noun? A Profession at the Source of the Imagination.”
