Bettina Rheims

In 2021, French photographer Bettina Rheims (born in 1952) donated her archives to the Institut pour la photographie; these archives constitute a significant and representative collection of photographic work from the 1980s through 2017.

With over 300,000 photographs, Bettina Rheims' collection is exceptionally well-cataloged and organized.
It includes all of her prints, as well as negatives, contact sheets, Polaroids, shooting specifications, handwritten notes, and more. Along with the images, this donation of her paper archives helps document the photographer’s work and projects. Her professional library and publications related to her works are also part of the collection. In connection with this donation, the Institut pour la photographie is developing projects focused on outreach and promotion in collaboration with Bettina Rheims, who wishes to share her experience and her story.

As an internationally renowned photographer, she is known for her elaborate setups, which reveal her sense of perfection and her interest in storytelling and ambiguity. For several decades, she has taken on a steady stream of commissions: fashion and advertising campaigns, portraits of celebrities (Charlotte Rampling, Catherine Deneuve, Madonna, Monica Bellucci…), and collaborations with international magazines. At the same time, she has developed a personal body of work that examines contemporary society.

Her series are the result of carefully thought-out projects, some of which involve a very large-scale production. Bettina Rheims photographs primarily indoors, particularly in her Paris studio, where a multitude of professions involved in photo shoots come together. It is there that she conceives unusual stories, approves her prints, and develops her projects. Photography books play a significant role in Bettina Rheims’s body of work, as they represent the final presentation of each series —a true work of storytelling and layout.

Bettina Rheims’s work is included in numerous public collections in France and abroad. Her work has been exhibited in prestigious contemporary art museums. Thus, her retrospective at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris in 2016 attracted more than 60,000 visitors.
