PERSPECTIVES

The Institut pour la photographie presents PERSPECTIVES, a new programme of ten exhibitions running from 8 October to 5 December 2021. This third programme of exhibitions is designed to put the Institut’s project and ambitions into perspective ahead of the closure of its premises for renovation work.

PERSPECTIVES thus offers the public a first glimpse of the photographic archive collections of Bettina Rheims, Jean-Louis Schoellkopf and Agnès Varda entrusted to the Institute: three iconic projects from Bettina Rheims’ career – La Chapelle (2018), Détenues (2014) and Rose c’est Paris (2010); a previously unseen exhibition of key works by Jean-Louis Schoellkopf, showcasing his distinctive approach to portraiture of the working class and urbanism; and the presentation of the first exhibition of photographs by Agnès Varda, held in the courtyard of her studio on Rue Daguerre in 1954.

The exhibition The Photographic Book: A Visual Experimental Space, dedicated to the author’s photographic book, is based on the first donation from Lucien Birgé, which will enrich the Institute’s library with over 25,000 volumes.

Once again, particular attention is being paid to vernacular photography – and more specifically to family photography – drawn from the private collection of Nadine and Paul Catry, who hail from the Hauts-de-France region.

PERSPECTIVES also showcases contemporary art with brand-new exhibitions by Aurélien Froment and Ezio d’Agostino, recipients of the Institut’s Research and Creation Support Programme, for their work focusing respectively on the photographer and filmmaker Pierre Zucca and on the phenomenon of religious apparitions. The Moroccan artist Yoriyas, invited for an artist’s residency in Roubaix, is taking over the building and its outdoor spaces.

The presentation of the architectural project by the firm Berger&Berger, supported by the Hauts-de-France Region and designed to transform the building, allows us to envisage together the future spaces of the Institut pour la photographie.

Close to its core missions, and with a particular focus on the various forms and uses of the photographic medium, the Institut pour la photographie is offering a programme of exhibitions – once again free of charge and open to all – to mark the conclusion of its preparatory phase and look ahead to the future.
