Jean-Louis Schoellkopf

In 2021, French photographer Jean-Louis Schoellkopf (born in 1946) donated his entire collection of negatives, Ektachrome slides, contact sheets, and exhibition prints —a total of more than 12,500 photographic works.

From his earliest images of Canada in the early 1970s to the photographs taken in Mulhouse in 2023, he has viewed photography as a tool for investigation and social critique, using it to examine the conditions of the working class and contemporary urban developments. His documentary approach particularly highlights the consequences of the end of the industrial era on these landscapes, both in France and abroad—Saint-Étienne, Genoa, Rotterdam, Stuttgart, Barcelona, the 13th and 19th arrondissements of Paris, Liévin... Taking into account their history, geography, and sociology. He portrays the workers and residents of these same places according to an established protocol, producing both common and unique configurations.

The comprehensive processing of this archival collection was completed in early 2026. Having been cataloged, repackaged, and digitized—either as individual images or as digital contact sheets—the collection is now available for research in the Institute’s database (upon request). The online catalog also allows everyone to gradually explore its collections.

The study of these bodies of work and the discussions with the photographer about his photographic practice mark a new dialectical relationship—a method central to his work.

In addition to the solo exhibitions dedicated to him by the Institut pour la photographie since 2021, various museums and institutions in France and abroad have showcased his work. His work is also held in French public collections such as the CNAP, the FRACs of Rhône-Alpes, Haute-Normandie, and Grand Large in Dunkirk; the Musée d’art moderne de la ville de Paris; the Musée d’art contemporain de Strasbourg; and the Caisse des dépôts et consignations.
