Jean-Louis Schoellkopf

Born in 1946 in Colmar, Jean-Louis Schoellkopf began practicing photography in the late 1960s in Canada. While working as a lab technician, he took his first photographs and began his career as a photographer: portraits of factory workers, views of Montreal, and portraits of musicians. 

In 1974, upon his return to France, he settled in Saint-Étienne, which at the time was still a major industrial center. After a few collaborations with the press, he abandoned the idea of photojournalism to focus on portraiture, which he approached on a city-wide scale. 

Jean-Louis Schoellkopf is interested in urban transformation, working-class culture, and work in the mines. He sneaks into factories to photograph the workers. The image becomes a means of exchange to spark a dialogue with the workers and raise awareness of their working conditions. He often breaks the rules, preferring not to align himself with any group, whether political or photographic. 

in the late 1970s, his position as an educator at a facility that helped people with disabilities reintegrate into society opened the door for him to create portraits within various institutions. This led to several series, including the Joubert series (1986). 

In 1986, the FRAC Rhône-Alpes purchased a collection of photographs from this series and from the Minors . He received a scholarship from that same institution to continue his work in Saint-Étienne. 

In 1987 and 1988, the Saint-Étienne School of Architecture commissioned him to create views of building facades. In these works, he explores the balance between the representation of the living space and its occupants. In his work, interior portraits serve as a common thread, mapping out ways of life in France and abroad. 

following his photography exhibition at the Maison de la Culture in Saint-Étienne in 1991, he worked for several years with the newspaper Liberation . 

starting in the early 1990s, he held a series of exhibitions. In particular, in 1997 he participated in the Documenta , a quinquennial contemporary art exhibition in Kassel. He continued his series of portraits of the working class throughout the 2000s. 

Jean-Louis Schoellkopf thus contributes to “documenting” these regions. These include industrial regions, whether in the process of deindustrialization or, conversely, undergoing revitalization. He is interested in people, their activities, and their stories, favoring a long-term approach that fosters a relationship of trust with those he photographs. 

Still active, Jean-Louis Schoellkopf continues his work in digital photography.
