For more than fifty years, Jean-Louis Schoellkopf, born in 1946, has been developing a body of photographic work dedicated to the end of the industrial era, working-class culture, and changes in the urban landscape.

A study of his archives, held at the Institut pour la photographie, reveals a frugal yet no less demanding approach to photography. Jean-Louis Schoellkopf worked with large- and medium-format view cameras, often on a tripod, using long exposure times, and limited his shooting to just a few shots. The variety and quality of his prints are in keeping with the artisanal tradition of the photographer-printer. His minimalist presentation styles, moreover, allow one to appreciate the physicality of the work.

This first exhibition features a selection of personal and commissioned works focused on portraiture and urbanism, including his installation presented at the Documenta X de Cassel in 1997. Jean-Louis Schoellkopf is particularly attuned to the reality of spaces. His portraits follow the same approach: he photographs his subjects in their familiar surroundings—at work or at home—allowing them to pose naturally. His approach to the urban landscape, meanwhile, captures the collective experience and offers a clear interpretation of urban history, which is constantly reshaped by human activity.

His projects also provide an opportunity to explore the documentary potential of photography through various approaches. The images, arranged in typological series, highlight the distinctive characteristics of a community, a profession, or a culture, while expressing the uniqueness of the subjects. More varied compositions, combining different styles, present a more comprehensive study of the theme at hand. Finally, the use of sequences allows for the logical connection of distinct settings and offers a tangible experience of the artist’s own exploration of the urban landscape. His entire body of work attests to an artistic approach that blends empathy with a keen eye.
