Elsewhere - A Quest for Perspectives

As part of the exhibition Elsewhere - A Quest for Perspectives , presented at the Boris Vian Middle School in Croix, workshops were held (on set design, writing, and outreach) led by the artists Ilanit Illouz, Cédric Gerbehaye, Wilfried N’Sondé, and Jean-Michel André. Various classes participated in setting up the exhibition, which invited us to take a thoughtful look at the places, spaces, and times experienced during exile.

The exhibition design workshop led by the Institut pour la photographie enabled the students to design the layout of the photographs selected for the exhibition. The exhibition booklet was created following a workshop conducted with photographer Jean-Michel André and writer Wilfried N’Sondé.

Photographer Cédric Gerbehaye presented his work and discussed the challenges of his profession as a photojournalist in the presence of Waïs, a refugee student from Afghanistan whom he met and photographed during a residency at Maurice Duhamel High School in the city of Loos. Following this encounter, the students—deeply moved by these stories—became the guides for the exhibition, sharing it with their classmates and teachers.

Photographer Ilanit Illouz presented her photographic work. The discussion gave the students an opportunity to reflect on the physical nature of her prints and to explore the importance of the journey in her practice through her accounts of her travels.

The encounters and experiences gained through this EROA* (Espace Rencontre Oeuvre d’Art) provided an opportunity to discover various professions related to photography and the world of exhibitions. From location scouting and photo shoots to editing, visual image processing, and even publications, the speakers were eager to highlight the unique aspects of their approaches.

Their stories of photographic journeys, travel, and exile brought to life the exhibition’s theme, which invited us to take a thoughtful look at the places, spaces, and times experienced during exile.
