Check out the recordings from the study day Street Photographers, Fairground Photographers, and Occasional Photographers—A History of “Non-Studio” Photographers (1900–1970) organized by the Institut pour la photographie on November 18, 2025, at the ANMT in Roubaix.
drawing on archival, museum, anthropological, and social perspectives, this symposium examines the history of photography professionals who are often anonymous and have long been marginalized: itinerant photographers.
These artisan photographers, whose work began to develop as early as 1870 on the fringes of the studios, have continually adapted to the economic and social contexts in which they operated.
Although diverse and little studied, their work has nevertheless contributed significantly to the development of self-image and to the popularization of photography.
