AMURAS

AMURAS (2020–2025) is a project that began in the Algarve—the starting point for Portuguese explorers—and continued in the Azores and Cape Verde—Portuguese discoveries—combining walking with photography.

In sailing, the term "amure" refers to:

“A boat’s position relative to the wind—or, more precisely, the side on which the tack (Amuras in Portuguese) faces the wind: we say ‘port tack’ when the boat faces the wind from the port (left) side, or ‘starboard tack’ when it faces the wind from the starboard (right) side. ” — Guide to Nautical Terms, Chasse Marée, 1997

In maritime exploration, the bow of the ship draws lines and traces paths of memory. Like this line on the water, the earthly trail of drifts is unique and resonates in the depths of time. As if the forces at work were unfolding within the cracks of scorched earth, the body’s movement surrenders and contributes to the construction of the here and now.

The slow, irregular rhythm of walking takes hold of the space and opens up new possibilities for how to inhabit a place (According to geographer Eric Dardel, “inhabiting” is “A way of understanding the world and a type of emotional relationship, far removed from an abstract or technocratic approach to space”). It is with an attitude of letting go and being open to whatever comes my way that I experience a sensitive reading of space.

Reviving the spirit of the great discoveries, Amuras it unfolds like a rhythmic interplay of thoughts and reveries that resonate. Perspectives unfold, creating new spaces to explore and inhabit.
