Sarah Ritter - Meeting with Students

Sarah Ritter, a photographer and researcher, is currently working on the second phase of a project titled The Shadow of the Earth , supported by the Institute’s Research and Creation Support Program. 

The photographs in this series come from a variety of settings (laboratories, scientific archives, the Alps, among others) and stem in particular from a residency at a contemporary optics laboratory that uses laser light as both a tool and a subject of research.  The Shadow of the Earth does not project onto a logical space, nor is it logical, because light—even when coherent—is no more so. 

The light of the laser merges with that of fire—the most  high-tech meets the archaic, ultimately leaving us without answers, mere  spectators of these strange observers who gravitate in a dark world—the flip side of our  own setting—the flip side of our augmented lives, illuminated to excess. 

Deep down, a secret lurks, drawing our gaze without allowing it the chance to close in soothing darkness. Disasters are to be expected in the stillness of the artificial night, among man-made suns and optical seas...
