Study Day - The Making of a Visual Culture
This seminar is part of an interdisciplinary postdoctoral research project focused on The Making of a Visual Culture: Photography and the News in France, 1960s–1980s .
They focus on a key element in the development of the visual culture of current events during this period: the ORTF photo archive—that is, television footage from 1964 to 1974—and on documentation professions within the media context.
This study day thus represents one of the first formal presentations of this research, which is being conducted in collaboration with the National Archives, which currently holds the entire ORTF collection—including a collection of agency photographs used as editorial support for the television newscast, which served as the starting point for this research. This research was initially supported in 2019 by one of the Institut pour la photographie’s research grants; then, in 2020–2021, by a grant from the INA.
