The 13 April 2023
After traveling throughout the Middle East and Africa, photographer Cédric Gerbehaye stepped outside his comfort zone: he turned his lens on his daily life and the people around him, in Belgium and northern France.
He admits it's a difficult task:
“What can one say, and how can one say it, when, after all, one’s gaze is not sharp—or at least has grown accustomed to it?”
This work led him to question what it means to be “at home,” and then to closely follow front-line services during the COVID-19 pandemic in the city of La Louvière. For several years, he also crossed the street—as a neighbor—to film, from an immersive perspective, the lives of inmates and staff at the Forest and Saint-Gilles prisons in Brussels. A work of long-term observation, intimacy, and connection. Brigitte Patient explores this “nearby elsewhere” with him as part of *Odyssée et horizons*, her exhibition at La Fileuse de Loos, hosted by the Lille Institut pour la photographie (through June 30, 2023).
