I'll go drown myself in that blue

I'll go drown myself in that blue is an artistic series that explores introspection, our relationship with immensity, and the way the horizon and the sea invite us to transcend reality. 

For two years, I photographed the horizon separating the Atlantic Ocean from the sky in the Basque Country using instant film. I also captured still video footage showing the sea—sometimes calm, sometimes raging. I took these first shots during a difficult time in my life. Photographing the ocean felt like a necessity. That horizon line became a guiding light, an obsession. 

And so I photographed that same horizon hundreds of times, over the course of several months, at different times of day. Inspired by the tradition of the sublime in Romantic painting, with works such as Monk by the Sea from Caspar David Friedrich to the Impressionist painters, I want to explore the sea as both a stage and a mirror for our emotions.

Capture this blue. Capture this ocean, so I don't sink.
To return there every day, every evening, in an attempt to feel it all over again.
This life, this emptiness, right in front of me.
Searching for answers—in this blue, in this water, in my tears.
Dive. Don't sink.
And then, that horizon beckoning.
That light, the waves, the sound of the waves crashing, the wind.
Close your eyes.
And drown myself in that blue.
