On a roll

On a roll is a 2,000-kilometer route that crosses six countries with a history of mining in Europe. 

Starting in Denain and passing through Fresnes-sur-Escaut—where the first French ore vein was discovered 300 years ago—I traveled all the way to Katowice, in Silesia. The photo series and accompanying film take viewers on a journey to meet people whose lives have been shaped by the mine and its culture—portraits, landscapes, and stories of their lives. 

We become storytellers and observers of this Black Europe—both past and present.
