Jean

The work I invite you to explore represents a distinct phase in my photographic research. 

Until now, I had carefully avoided any direct reference to my personal and family history… and then my brother died. The images I present here do not fulfill any duty to remember; they do not chronicle anything and are devoid of pathos. They are simply an evocation of a life full of gaps, a life cut short: a noncommissioned officer in the French Navy, Jean shunned others and ran away from himself—and he died. Beyond our shared early childhood, I know nothing about him, yet I am bound to him by an unwavering affection, and I know only this: mourning a younger brother is mourning one’s own childhood.
