Transform Images

The Project Transform Images arose from a shared reflection on the relationships that each teenager forms with photographs they did not take themselves. These are images of which they are not the creators, yet which occupy a prominent place both in their visual environment and in their imagination—social media, posters, digital communications, magazines, newspapers, books, family photo albums, etc. 

The aim of this project is to examine the image—both as signifier and as signified—as a witness: a witness to an era and a society, with their respective cultural practices, events, phenomena, and so on.

From collecting to altering images, the students were able to reflect on the status of images and on how that status—linked to a particular use—can change. Through this activity—which was both physical and symbolic—discussions arose about the limits of photographic images: to what extent does a photograph remain a photograph? What can it become? How can our gaze stop at the boundaries of the image, or, conversely, cross them to imagine its invisible parts, its depth, its movement, and what lies outside the frame?
