The Project My mother is a river was carried out as part of the project Facts and Figures , co-produced by the Institut pour la photographie and MAPS Agency.
“My mother is a river. Her fine, black hair was a river… My mother was a river of words.”
"From the outside, the Hellemmes Parent-Child Center looks like an ordinary building, with a small courtyard, a large common room, and a daycare center. But it's a special place.
The tenants are exclusively mothers and couples with young children. The center welcomes pregnant women and couples with children under the age of 3 who are facing temporary difficulties and need help adjusting to their new roles as parents. Every apartment has its own story. Each apartment is a treasure chest, filled with love for their children, exhaustion, anxieties, and all the challenges that come with being parents.
In 2018, I became a mother. I discovered an incredible new strength within myself. But I was also overwhelmed by a fragility I had never experienced before. With the women I met in Lille, I tried to build a conversation about motherhood, free from stereotypes—a conversation that would restore the beauty and resilience of these mothers (and fathers) who are struggling to become parents.”
This project was featured in a publication and an exhibition on the Institute’s website and at the Les Cerisiers Parent-Child Center (APE).
