Simona Ghizzoni

Born in Italy in 1977, Simona Ghizzoni is a photographer and visual activist for women's rights.

Her work revolves around two major themes that frequently overlap: the social dimension of women and the intimate dimension of the self-portrait.

Although her images are often inspired by social themes, Simona Ghizzoni tends to adopt a personal and participatory narrative—sometimes even fantastical—that stems from the intimate relationship she builds with her subjects.

In his series of self-portraits, a recurring theme is a visceral connection to the environment, oscillating between autobiography and fiction.

A two-time World Press Photo award winner for her work on women’s issues, her work has been widely featured in solo and group exhibitions, notably at the Nobel Peace Center in Oslo, Paris Photo, at PhotoEspaña, the Auditorium in Rome, the Athens Photo Festival, the Ex-Mattatoio in Rome, Fotografia Europea, the Museum of Rome (Palazzo Braschi), and the Bevilacqua La Masa Foundation. In 2022, she chaired the European jury for World Press Photo.

Ghizzoni is a TEDx speaker and regularly gives lectures and teaches courses at various European schools and universities. As a co-founder of MAPS Images, she is represented in Italy by the MLB Gallery.
