The Project

featuring Jean-Michel André and Lionel Pralus

With the guidance of artists Jean-Michel André and Lionel Pralus, fifteen students from Boris Vian Middle School in Croix developed a multifaceted approach to photography over the course of the year, which served as a springboard for a sensitive and unique exploration and reinterpretation of their surroundings.

using material gathered from the real world during walks along the routes students take to get to school, the group created a map that served as the basis for both individual and group projects.

Jean-Michel André guided the students toward a documentary approach, inviting them to trace the history of the town of Croix in the spaces they encounter every day. Through a more experimental process combining various photographic techniques and methods—such as the view camera and the creation of GIF animations—new images emerged from the fusion of the city’s archival photographs and the students’ own creations. By introducing the imagination into this real environment, the students revealed a world at the intersection of the town’s past, their own experiences of the place, and futuristic elements.

The final exhibition showcasing these year-long projects gave students the opportunity to reflect on ways to create a collective narrative about this here based on each person's individual perspective and subjectivity.
