DELTA - War Plants

Every year, the program DELTA , an initiative launched by the Hauts-de-France DRAC, enables three cultural organizations—the CRP, L’H du Siège, and the Institut pour la photographie—to invite an artist to develop an artistic project involving residents from their three respective regions.

The Project

This edition chronicles the excavation of the traces left by the North African riflemen during their passage through and battles in the Hauts-de-France region in May 1940.

What are the stories and memories of these soldiers—from their journey beginning with the Battle of Gembloux in Belgium to their evacuation during Operation Dynamo in the Dunkirk region?

The project explores these stories through “war plants”—plants that have moved along with the passage of armies and can emerge from dormancy after several decades.

Conceived as fragments, the various pages (un)tie a faint narrative in which absence, transparency, and invisibility unfold.

The research was conducted with members of the Lille Committee for Undocumented Migrants (CSP59), a former French soldier, as well as with first-grade, CE1 and CE2 in Valenciennes and Douchy-les-Mines, in the form of printmaking workshops, interviews, and analyses of archival images.
