Chaplin and The Dictator

The Institut pour la photographie is partnering with the Rencontres d’Arles to co-produce an exhibition dedicated to film The Dictator by Charlie Chaplin, made in 1940 to mark his 80th birthday. 

This political satire of the Nazi regime—and more specifically of Hitler—which was made despite pressure from the German government, was Chaplin’s biggest commercial success. 

Through previously unseen materials—film clips, photographs, and various archival items—the exhibition sheds light on the context surrounding the creation, production, and release of Chaplin’s first talking movie.
