As part of the News from the Faculty of Arts at the University of Picardie Jules Verne Émilie Goudal, Research Associate at the CEAC (University of Lille) and the 2022 scholarship recipient will give a lecture on the topic of Enduring images, resilient images. Algerian independence as the foundation for an aesthetic of emancipation?
This lecture will focus on the use of archival images of Algerian independence in the works of contemporary artists. Using a selection of critical visual reinterpretations of these historical images and photographic works by Agnès Varda, Dennis Adams, and Zineb Sedira as examples, this presentation will analyze the relationships between photography, film, and contemporary art, interwoven with a global political history of emancipatory struggles.
Engaging with these artistic reinterpretations and visual productions linked to decolonization in the present could therefore provide an opportunity to grasp and outline the contours of an aesthetic of resistance, if not the emergence of an “aesthesis” of emancipation…
