Milka

Milka is the lovely mom, originally from Slovenia.

Her parents arrived in France in 1928 to work in the coal mines of the Lens mining basin. Milka is the French name for Emilie.

at nearly 88 years old, Milka is still independent. She lives alone in a small retirement home in a former mining town near Lens. Her daughters take care of her. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren visit her regularly, call her, or even video chat with her via “FaceTime” on her iPad. That’s right—Milka keeps up with the times! Despite her minor physical limitations, she continues to cook every day, bake cakes on Sundays, or whenever she has friends and family over.

This photographic project is intended to evoke the little world she has created for herself to stay at home. This series isn’t meant to be nostalgic—just a record… Of course, Milka gave her consent. Her only request was not to be clearly recognizable in the photos… but if you look closely, she’s definitely there.
