Photosensitive - Memories
Through a program designed by artist Catherine Duverger, young people—supported by three organizations in the Audomarois region—the Maison des Adolescents Littoral in Saint-Omer, the Audomarois Support Platform for Caregivers (ELSAA), and the Judicial Protection of Youth—developed a dynamic approach to archival photography. This project was carried out in collaboration with the Pas-de-Calais Department and L’espace 36 in Saint-Omer.
The Project
featuring Catherine Duverger
using images from both the Pas-de-Calais Departmental Archives and family photo collections, the young people explored the possibilities offered both by the physical nature of the images and by the interplay between images of the past—taken by strangers— and their own images of the present.
Through dialogue or analogy, by reproducing and staging existing images, or by concealing details, the participants playfully explored the possibilities and limitations of photographs as objects of memory.
By experimenting with different media and techniques, they have also combined and interwoven these photographs with one another. The boundaries separating their eras and origins thus become blurred, even indistinguishable. Through these new images, the viewer (re)discovers this heritage—which is both intimate and public—in a new light.
This project was the subject of a publication.
