La Bonaventure

La Bonaventure is a project conceived for and with the neighbors of the Institut pour la photographie; it was developed in collaboration with FoMu in Antwerp and the City of Lille, with the support of the European Metropolis of Lille.

La Bonaventure was born out of an artist residency by Belgian photographer Vincen Beeckman in the vicinity of Rue de Thionville. Incorporating into his practice the worlds and people he encounters and who move him, he conceived—at the invitation of the Institut pour la photographie—a participatory creative project with twelve people who live or work in the neighborhood.

Aëlle, Chloé, Denise, Denise-Marie, Giovanna-Paola, Hélène, Jawad, Karine, Kathrin, Ophélie, Perrine, and Pierre are between 18 and 90 years old and reflect the cultural and social diversity unique to this part of Old Lille.

The Project

featuring Vincen Beeckman

In line with the vision the Institute has articulated for its future development, Vincen Beeckman wanted to explore with each person their ideas about their future and their deepest aspirations.

It was through a meeting with tarot reader Rosa Gonzales Villaman—Le Champ fleurit—that each participant became involved in the project. The goal was then to explore together—and sometimes to discover—what might be deeply resonating within them at that moment.

Exploring a key theme of this exchange, the participants then—in dialogue with Vincen Beeckman—conveyed their stories through images, words, and objects. Somewhere between personal narrative and fiction, each adventure unfolded as a performance that brought together echoes of the past, an awareness of the present, and visions of the future.

through a series of altars that resonate as much with Western culture as with Eastern traditions, the exhibition at Sainte-Marie-Madeleine Church focused on the small to share, in a sensitive and thoughtful way, the fragile, delicate, and precious aspects of our lives.
