Charles de Gaulle, as seen by photographers

While awaiting its third exhibition program, scheduled for fall 2021, the Institut pour la photographie is opening its doors with an exhibition dedicated to Charles de Gaulle—originally planned for fall 2020 as an off-site exhibition—and is hosting lille3000 along with the exhibition Young Colors, which brings together 38 young artists to explore the theme of color. 

General de Gaulle’s life was extensively documented through photography and television. The exhibition offers a new perspective on these images, which helped shape a figure who became an icon.

The selection focuses on photojournalism and his television appearances, which reveal how power is staged. 

These images continue to shape our memories, and they define not a certain idea of France, but a certain idea of humanity.
