Yuna Mathieu-Chovet

Yuna Mathieu-Chovet is a visual artist and photographer who graduated from ECAL in Lausanne, where she studied under artists such as John M. Armleder and Sylvie Fleury, for whom she worked as an assistant. 

In 2011, she moved to Belgium and co-founded the artist-run space Plagiarama , a Brussels-based exhibition space run by and for artists. As a photographer, Yuna Mathieu-Chovet explores the role of the artistic object, its nature, and its representation through installations that blend painting and photography, traditional display methods, and direct interventions on the wall, blurring the boundaries between the artwork, its subject, and its medium. Her work thus explores abstract photography featuring ephemeral and elusive subjects—light, fluids—that seeks to transcend conventional forms and formats. 

In late 2022, she completed a one-year residency at Contretype—Center for Contemporary Photography in Brussels, during which she developed her project Unsquared , which also led to a lecture at ARBA-ESA: “ Subject and Representation: The Dual Nature of Photography " and the publication of " For a purely approximate abstraction "Published in *La Part de l’Œil*, Journal of Visual Arts Theory, No. 37, 2023. Her work has been exhibited at the Galerie Michèle Chomette (Paris), the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Lausanne (Switzerland), the Fri Art Kunsthalle Fribourg (Switzerland), La Générale en Manufacture (Paris), at the Halles de Schaerbeek (Brussels), the Pavillon Populaire in Montpellier (France), the Viper Festival in Basel (Switzerland), the Biennale de l’Image en Mouvement — Center for Contemporary Image in Saint-Gervais, Geneva (Switzerland), and at the Locarno Film Festival (Switzerland).
