Rosalind Fox Solomon

Rosalind Fox Solomon was born on April 2, 1930, in Illinois and died on June 23, 2025, in New York City.

Rosalind Fox Solomon began her career as a photographer at the age of 38. In the early 1970s, she studied with Lisette Model, who became her mentor as she learned the craft. 

Initially specializing in portraiture, she traveled around the world and developed a body of work with metaphorical qualities that reveal the harshness of existence while expressing her personal reflections on her own culture. Her images, in which the immediate surroundings sometimes prove more significant than the expression of the subject being photographed, reflect a quasi-anthropological approach that is also evident in her interest in rituals.

Throughout her career, Rosalind Fox Solomon has remained faithful to the 6x6 medium format. Her images are never cropped, and her mastery of the printing process allows her to interpret them with a rich and subtle palette of tones and contrasts. Her work is included in the collections of major museums worldwide, and her archives have been housed at the Center for Creative Photography in Tucson since 2007. This year, Rosalind Fox Solomon was honored with the International Center of Photography (ICP) Award in New York for her lifetime achievement.
