Raphaële Bertho
Researcher, artistic director, and exhibition curator
Born in 1982 in Paris, France, Raphaële Bertho lives and works in Paris.
She is a historian of photography and an exhibition curator, a lecturer in the arts, and a member of the InTRu research laboratory (EA 6301). She has been the head of the Social Careers Department at the IUT de Tours since 2022.
Since 2005, she has been working on the aesthetic and political issues surrounding the representation of contemporary territory. In 2013, she published the book The DATAR Photography Mission: A Laboratory for the Contemporary Landscape (La Documentation française) and co-edited the 2024 book *Photographing Greater Paris: A History of Metropolitan Change* (Hermann). She has curated exhibitions In the DATAR Mission’s workshop (Arles Photography Festival, 2017) and French Landscapes: A Photographic Journey, 1984–2017 (BnF, 2017–2018) and the international exhibition Modern Vanities at the National Center for Photography and Images in Taiwan in 2025.
Between 2020 and 2025, she served as artistic director for the public commission “Territoire(s),” sponsored by the Seine-Saint-Denis department and the Maison de la Culture 93. Since 2019, she has been participating in the “Tailleurs d’images” research program, which combines artistic practices with ergonomic approaches. This has included organizing several exhibition-actions in 2019 and 2020 and establishing a research-creation seminar in 2024. As part of this initiative, she is contributing to the development of Marielsa Niels’s creative-research residency at the Musée Nicéphore Niépce, titled “This Is Not an Exhibition: It Is a Movement” (October–December 2025). In 2026, she will be in a research residency at the Archives de la Vienne to prepare an exhibition marking the bicentennial of photography.
She is currently a member of the steering committee of the research collective “Inventer le Grand Paris,” a member of the advisory committee of the Committee on the History of Urban Policy, a member of the MSHB’s scientific council, and an elected member of the CNU in Section 18.
