Mary Ellen Mark

Mary Ellen Mark (1940–2015) gained worldwide recognition through her numerous books, exhibitions, and collaborations with magazines. 

A graduate of the Annenberg School for Communications at the University of Pennsylvania, photographer Mary Ellen Mark is internationally recognized for her in-depth reporting on social issues such as homelessness, brothels, and circuses in India. 

A freelance photographer, she worked for leading magazines beginning in the 1960s and was a member of the Magnum Photos agency from 1977 to 1982. While this profession traditionally views images as a source of information, Lisette Model is a key influence for Mark. 

By capturing the strangeness—and even the irony—of reality, she challenges common assumptions about society. Her equipment is varied: 35 mm, medium-format, and large-format negatives. Mary Ellen Mark does not hesitate to use a wide variety of perspectives—ranging from frontal, centered shots to close-ups with sometimes extreme angles—to capture her subjects’ spontaneous expressions, while giving significant weight to the context. 

His images, which are sometimes dreamlike, allow for an almost instantaneous understanding of the photographed scene while encouraging the viewer to explore its complexity.
