Emilio Azevedo

Emilio Azevedo's visual art is grounded in research aimed at establishing the cultural and historical foundations of the ecological crisis as it relates to modernity. The artist develops an approach that addresses postcolonial history and geography in all their complexity.

He is currently developing a series of works exploring the processes of anthropization that took place in the western Amazon during the 20th century. This research, which began at the École Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie in Arles, has so far received support from major European art institutions, such as the Musée du quai Branly in Paris, the Wiels Center for Contemporary Art in Brussels, the FOMU-Fotomuseum in Antwerp, the Luma Foundation, the Department of Contemporary Visual Arts of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, and the Futures Foundation. This project has also received awards, notably the Musée du Quai Branly Photography Prize, the 2022 Marc Ladreit de Lacharrière Photography Prize, and the 2022 Dior Prize for Photography and Visual Arts. With the support of the SOFAM grant, he will participate in the 2023 residency program at the Wiels Center for Contemporary Art (Forest, Belgium).
