Chrystel Mukeba

Based in Brussels, Chrystel Mukeba (born in 1983) studied photography at ARBA ESA. 

Her photographic work—primarily analog and consisting of portraits—focuses on intimacy, questions of identity, and roots. The need to capture people and moments in time are recurring themes explored by the photographer. 

through portraits and images of everyday life, she attempts to capture the fleeting nature of a moment by highlighting the fragility and preciousness of an instant or a detail. A publication on this theme titled MOMENTS , was published in 2022 by Arp2 Editions with the support of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation. 

She exhibits regularly in Belgium and, more recently, abroad (Rencontres Photographiques de Guyane 2023...), and has participated in numerous group exhibitions (Civa, Condroz Photography Biennial, La CENTRALE for Contemporary Art Brussels …) as well as solo exhibitions. Her work is among the new acquisitions of Kanal Pompidou—the “Portraits Style Congo” series, 2021–2022. 

The year 2024 marked a new turning point in her career; she received the Sofam grant as well as a grant from Fomu, which enabled her to begin the first phase of her latest long-term project in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. I've Never Seen My Father Cry . In 2025, he was awarded a new grant from the Wallonia-Brussels Federation to begin Chapter 2. This project was exhibited at Fomu in Antwerp from February through May 2025.
