Aurélien Froment

Born in 1976 in Angers, Aurélien Froment lives and works in Edinburgh, Scotland. 

He studied at the École régionale des Beaux-Arts in Rennes, the École supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Nantes, and Manchester Metropolitan University in the United Kingdom. Winner of the Young Artists Award at the Mulhouse 001 Biennial in 2001, he also participated in the Gwangju Biennial in 2010, the Lyon Biennial in 2011, the Venice Biennale in 2013, and the Sydney Biennale in 2014. 

In 2019, he was awarded the Institut pour la photographie's Research and Creation Grant for his project Optical Theater , focusing on the work of photographer Pierre Zucca. This project will take the form of an exhibition, first presented at the Institut pour la photographie in 2021, then at the Rencontres d'Arles in 2023.

Somewhere between documentary and fiction, the multifaceted work of Aurélien Froment is permeated by the principles of storytelling and mise en abyme. The artist weaves together numerous references by combining text, images, and video within his works. He reworks preexisting creations, forms, and concepts, analyzing and deconstructing their multiple interpretations. Far from drawing unambiguous conclusions, Aurélien Froment cultivates areas of uncertainty by playing on the ambiguity that accompanies these ideas and animates our world.
