Photo-textual Strategies in the Reinvention of Narrative Forms

Join us for the presentation of the winning projects from the 5th e edition of the Institute’s Scholarship Program on the theme The Stories We Tell, the Stories We Show: Photo-Textual Strategies in the Reinvention of Narrative Forms .
While writing a narrative involves a certain poetics, it is first and foremost a way of representing, recounting, narrating, and telling—terms that also refer to many practices in photography. But beyond this initial analogy, the interplay between photography and text often takes on the character of a visual and narrative strategy: across the various genres of storytelling—autobiography, investigative reporting, fiction, and history—the unique qualities of the image and the written word complement one another, giving rise to new forms through the interplay of photography and text.
It brings to mind the Surrealists, with their famous Nadja whose use of photographs revolutionized literary conventions, but also to photo-text series that emphasize narrative form, including the famous Venetian Suite by Sophie Calle (1980) or certain series by Carie Mae Weems, in which the short stories accompanying the photographs restore the full humanity that had once been obscured—not to mention the current strong resurgence of new narrative forms developing alongside the images…
Federica Chiocchetti , director of the Musée de Locle (Switzerland), art historian, and co-founder of the website Photo Captionist will be the guest speaker at this afternoon’s presentation session. A specialist in the relationship between photography and text, she will engage in a discussion with each of the award winners following their presentations and will conclude the afternoon with a brief summary of this research, which encompasses a range of photo-textual strategies—from letters of complaint to archives and AI, from photo albums to bodies marked and inscribed with text.
