Introduction to "Americium" by Théodora Barat

Americium , Théodora Barat's first feature film, is in competition at the Cinéma du Réel festival at the Centre Pompidou.

↘︎ Synopsis: Military nuclear research and the uranium mining industry have devastated New Mexico. In opposition to the official narrative promoted in the region’s museums, women are fighting to raise awareness of the environmental racism at work in this area.

Americium is the result of Théodora Barat's nuclear wanderings in the Four Corners region of the United States. 

This project was co-produced with the Académie de France in Rome—Villa Medici—and with support from the Étant Donnés Residency Program organized by the Institut français, the FACE Foundation, and the Villa Albertine, as well as the Île-de-France Regional Directorate of Cultural Affairs — Ministry of Culture, the Hauts-de-France Institut pour la photographie, Christian and Anne Mayeur of Mayeur Projects (Las Vegas, New Mexico), the Media Art and Technology Department at NMHU (Las Vegas, New Mexico), and the F’A’A Residency, supported by the DRAC Centre-Val de Loire. It is also being developed as part of the RADIAN doctoral program.
