Workshop - Interferential Photography

These events, organized by the Office of Cultural Affairs, the Phlam and Irhis laboratories, and CEAC at the University of Lille, along with the Institut pour la photographie in partnership with the French Physical Society, enrich the exhibition The Precious Plates of Auguste Ponsot . 

On view at the University of Lille’s Espace Culture on the Cité Scientifique campus from February 2 to May 12, 2023, this exhibition recalls that at the Lille Institute of Physics in the early 20th century, Auguste Ponsot sought to improve Gabriel Lippmann’s process for direct color photography; Lippmann would go on to win the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1908 for his interferometric method.

The fifteen plates by Auguste Ponsot, which have survived to this day with their remarkable colors, mark a new milestone in the history of interference photography.
