Tataki-zome Workshops

As part of the new edition Môm’art as part of the lille3000 UTOPIA cultural season, the Institute invites children of all ages to try their hand at tataki-zome. Join Hideyuki Ishibashi to discover this ancient Japanese technique of printing on fabric using plant materials to create new images.

Tataki zomé is an ancient Japanese art form that involves printing on fabric using real plants.  The Japanese term “tataki zomé” can be translated as “hammering” (tataki) and “dyeing” (zomé). This printing technique involves pounding plant material (freshly cut leaves or flowers) onto fabric. The pounding process releases the plant’s juices and draws out the sap, resulting in the imprint of the plant material on the fabric.
