In the summer of 1797, in a forest in the Aveyron region, peasants captured a deaf-mute child—unshaven, naked, crawling on all fours, and subsisting on acorns and roots. This “wild child” was taken to Paris, to the Institute for the Deaf and Mute, where he became a curiosity for visitors. Professor Pinel, considering him an incurable idiot, wanted to send him to an asylum. A young doctor obtains custody of the child. In his home, with the help of his housekeeper, Mrs. Guérin, Itard sets out to bring “Victor of Aveyron” out of his darkness and into the world of humanity.
