A World Tour of Urban Dance in 10 Cities

In this dance performance, Ana Pi takes us on a world tour of urban dance styles in a format that is both spectacular and educational. While not claiming to be exhaustive, she offers a broad overview: Krump in Los Angeles, Dancehall in Kingston, Pantsula in Johannesburg, and Voguing in New York…
For each of these dances, we will explore the geographic, social, and cultural context associated with it, as well as the unique characteristics of each movement. This transmission helps us understand the origins of each dance and how they are connected to the diversity of African dances, which were carried in the bodies of those who endured the conditions imposed by the slave system, and of those who, for economic reasons, were forced to migrate from their homelands to expanding cities. The major cities of the world where these dances are created are cosmopolitan metropolises, shaped by waves of deportation and immigration. These dances bear witness to the complexity of these histories, while also serving as a source of collective healing and empowerment.
