ROLLING PAPER #3 - INDEPENDENT PHOTOGRAPHY BOOK FAIR

Female Researchers Catarina Boieiro and Raquel Schefer will make a special appearance at the BAL their ongoing research on photography books published around the 1970s in the context of the independence struggles of the former Portuguese colonies in Africa (Angola, Mozambique, Guinea-Bissau, Cape Verde).

Little known and rarely studied, this body of forgotten works is significant not only for its historical value but also for its visual and graphic appeal. Straddling the line between activist documents and sophisticated aesthetic objects, these works offer a unique perspective on the power of the photographic image. In the specific case of Portuguese-speaking African countries, these photography books enabled various movements to document and disseminate the complex reality of the liberation struggles and ongoing decolonization processes.

This project is supported by the Grant for Research and Creative Work from the Institut pour la photographie.
